Spielberg gives us a lot to think about in this film. I just can't help being annoyed that it's delivered in a glitzy Tom Cruise - action scene - car chase - over stimulation - package. I like action as much as the next guy and I appreciate the special effect tricks. They just seem in such contrast with the unanswered and interesting questions raised by the film. First, the paradox of seeing a future that will be changed by seeing it - are there two futures? Next, the corollary discussion of predestination vs. self-determination - can you change the future? And finally, the morality of keeping the hive brain precog folks locked up in their milky soup - is the greater social good enough? You know, ends vs. means.

I think the message, if there is one, is fogged by the package. But this is my own personal prejudice - action sells, maybe not as good as sex, but it does sell.

The screenwriter has challenged us with some twists in the plot, which I would call a whodunit - did idunit? - no hedunit scenario. The plot kept my attention and stayed with me thinking about it for a day - a good sign.

Finally, I thought the immorality of keeping the minority report a secret was pretty clearly defined in the story. What I am fuzzy about is the final resolution. Did it occur because of the commission of a single crime? That seems unrealistic. Or did it occur because of the immorality of canceling self-determination as an option for the perps? Maybe one of my readers will get back to me on this one.
